The Museum of Považie Region is a regional museum located in Budatín, a town part of Žilina. It houses exhibitions focusing on the history of the region, tinker trade, and transportation. The museum resides in Budatínsky zámok castle in Žilina, where it houses the castle and tinker trade exhibitions. The museum also administers Strečno castle ruin, Wedding hall in Bytča, the Folk Architecture Houses in Čičmany, Jánošík and Terchová Exhibition, and the Museum of Transport in Rajecké Teplice.
The museum has been located in Budatínsky zámok since 1954. Before that, its collections were housed in the town hall building on Mariánske námestie square in Žilina. The first efforts to open the museum came from Ignác Rada, but he was not successful. Vojtech Tvrdý and Eugen Medvecký later continued working on Rada’s idea. In 1954, the museum had only one employee—historian Vlasta Kristenová, but by the late 1950s, several experts began to join her, and the scientific research activities of the museum progressed. During the 1960s, the museum expanded with the external exhibitions. After the restoration was completed, the doors of Strečno castle ruin were also opened to the public.
Since 2006, the museum's location, Budatínsky zámok, has been undergoing reconstruction. The museum was reopened to visitors in 2019.
Museum of Považie Region has been regularly participating in our Open Parks and Gardens Weekend event for several years with its nature-landscape park near Budatínsky zámok. This park is one of the oldest and rarest parks in Žilina.
